Cherry Shrimp Natural History

Size

This shrimp species can grow up to 4cm.

Habitat and Distribution

They can be found inhabiting freshwater steams, ponds and lakes in Taiwan.

Age

These shrimps have an expected lifespan of 2 years.

Diet

They feed on Algae.

Groups and Breeding

Females develop eggs and release a pheromone to signal to males that they are ready to lay. Males deposit sperm on the females body which fertilises the eggs as she lays them. She continues to carry the fertilised eggs until they hatch 3 weeks later.

Threats

Their populations appear to be stable in the wild, breeding regularly and rarely being captured for the pet trade.

Interesting Facts

Females carrying fertilised eggs are said to be “berried”.
