Vietnamese Spiny Stick Insect

Vietnamese Spiny Stick Insect Natural History

Size

Male Vietnamese Spiny Stick Insects can grow up to 6cm and females are slightly larger growing up to 8cm.

Habitat and Distribution

They are found in forests in Vietnam.

Diet

They feed on leaves.

Groups and Breeding

Females can produce babies parthenogenically (lay eggs that don’t need fertilising) but the offspring from this can only be female. Their eggs incubate for 3 to 4 months and once they hatch it takes a further 4 months for them to reach adult size.

Threats

This species is not often captured for the pet trade, however it does live in an area which is heavily deforested and in recent history has been heavily damaged through war. Their habitat is fragmented as a result but numbers seem to be healthy for now.

Interesting facts

If threatened they can secrete a chemical which some people claim smells like peanut butter.
