Unicorn Snail Natural History

Size

These are one of the smallest species of land snail only growing up to 2cm.

Habitat and Distribution

They can be found in woodland, grassland and agricultural areas.

Diet

Unicorns eat a variety of plant matter including leaves, fruits and vegetables.

Groups and Breeding

During each egg laying period a female can lay up to 9 eggs and can have up to 9 clutches in her lifetime. Females produce eggs from 38 days of age and can self fertilise. Eggs incubate for 15 days.

Threats

This species adapts well to different conditions and is often found in large numbers. It is a pest species in introduced countries, including the UK where it is a greenhouse pest.

Interesting Facts

The shell of this species is translucent and the yellow colouration is given by the soft body of the snail inside the shell.
