Jungle Nymph Natural History

Size

The jungle nymph can grow to between 10-17cm long with females being larger than males, and weighs 65g when fully grown.

Habitat and Distribution

This is a nocturnal invertebrate which is native to Malaysia. They thrive in a rainforest habitat.

Age

The lifespan of a jungle nymph is up to 3 years old. They become sexually mature at approximately 12 months and then live for up to 6 to 24 months after this.

Diet

Jungle nymphs are herbivores feedings on a variety of leaves, seeds and berries.

Groups and Breeding

Females lay their eggs in the soil with their ovipositor. The eggs can take up to 12 to 14 months to hatch.

Threats

The IUCN Red List classes this species as Data Deficient meaning that this species’ wild population has yet to be studied.

Interesting facts

Jungle nymphs are the heaviest of all the stick insects. Females are a vivid green and males are brown. All jungle nymphs have thorns on their bodies which are an effective defence mechanism.
