Golden Gecko Natural History

Size

Males are slightly larger than females growing up to 8 inches in length.

Habitat and Distribution

Golden Geckos inhabit the forests and rocky areas (such as mountains and cliffs) of Vietnam.

Diet

These lizards are mostly insectivores but will also feed on a little fruit too.

Groups and Breeding

Males can be distinguished from females as they have longer tail bases and fleshy bumps at the base of the tail. They also have pores on the insides of the legs.

Threats

These geckos are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their biggest threat comes from being overharvested as a source of food and for the international pet trade.

Interesting Facts

The golden part of their name comes from their golden scales. Meanwhile their Latin name, ‘badenii’ comes from the Vietnamese, Ba Den meaning Black Lady due to them being indigenous to Nui Ba Den (Black Lady Mountain).
