Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion Natural History

Size

The Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion can grow up to 14cm long.

Habitat and Distribution

This nocturnal scorpion inhabits North America in desert regions where they live in burrows as deep as 2.5m.

Diet

These arachnids feed on insects and very small mammals (such as young mice).

Groups and Breeding

After mating, females give birth to live young and the young live on her back for approximately 1 week.

Threats

This species is not listed on the IUCN Red List.

Interesting Facts

Whilst the venom in their sting is similar in strength to a honeybee’s sting, they can similarly cause an allergic reaction. Females have wider and stockier bodies but males tend to have larger pincers.
