Brazilian Rainbow Boa Natural History

Size

The Brazilian rainbow boa can typically reach lengths of  1.2m to 1.8m, with females typically growing larger than males. They can weigh between 2 – 5 pounds.

Habitat and Distribution

They are widespread across South America including the Amazon Basin. They are a ground dwelling snake who can be found in humid forest and even open savannahs. They are a crepuscular snake who are mostly active between dusk and dawn.

Age

The lifespan of an rainbow boa in captivity is up to 20 years.

Diet

Like all snakes, Rainbow Boas are carnivores. They are constrictors who feast on small mammals, birds and lizards.

Groups and Breeding

They are solitary animals who only come together for breeding. After a gestation period of 6 months, the female will give birth to live young of anywhere between 12-15 babies. They are around 38cm when they are born and can reach lengths of 1.2m in the first year.

Threats

The Brazilian Rainbow Boa face threats from the illegal pet trade and habitat destruction. The IUCN Red List classes this species as Least Concern.

Interesting Facts

They get their unique iridescent colouration from their scales. Their scales have microscopic ridges on the surface which act like a prism refracting light which gives them their rainbow shine.
