Barbados Blue Snail Natural History

Size

This small snail species reaches 2cm as an adult.

Habitat and Distribution

These land snails are endemic to Barbados.

Diet

These snails have a very healthy appetite and will eat a wide variety of vegetables and leaves. They also need plenty of calcium in their diet to maintain their strong shell.

Threats

While this species has not been evaluated by the IUCN yet it is threatened with habitat loss for human development. They are also facing challenges in finding food as an invasive species, the Giant African Snail, out-competes them for it.

Interesting facts

They breathe through hole situated where their foot meets the shell- only a few millimetres off the ground.
