Crested Gecko Natural History

Size

This is a large species of gecko reaching up to 25cm in length.

Habitat and Distribution

These nocturnal geckos spend their nights foraging for food in the forest canopy but rest in thick vegetation closer to the ground during the day. They are endemic to New Caledonia- a archipelago in the Pacific Ocean so, they are only found on a few islands in the world.

Age

In captivity their lifespan can be up to 20 years.

Diet

The Crested Gecko is and omnivore feeding on insects, small mammals, flowers and fruit.

Threats

This species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN with a declining population due to habitat loss caused by wildfires, logging and clearing for agriculture.

Interesting Facts

These geckos are also known as eyelash geckos due to the hair-like protrusions growing above their eyes.
