Red Clawed Crab Natural History

Size

They can grow up to 7 cm.

Habitat and Distribution

The inhabit brackish habitats such as mangrove forests. They are found in the Indo-Pacific region ranging from Zanzibar to Japan and Fiji.

Age

In captivity this crab can live for between 2- 2.5 years.

Diet

These crabs are omnivores, feeding on small water invertebrates and plant matter.

Groups and Breeding

Females carry their eggs on their backs until they hatch releasing a larval stage of the crab into the water. Before they reach maturity they go through 4 larval stages.

Threats

They are collected quite heavily for the pet trade. However, they also inhabit a lot of hard to access areas and as such are able to thrive in those places.

Interesting facts

If they lose a limb they are able to regenerate it.
