Size
They can exceed lengths of 1 meter (3.6ft) and weigh up to 600g (1.3lbs).
Habitat and Distribution
This species inhabits shrubland, grassland and forests across a large range spanning in the west from Croatia to the east in Kyrgyzstan and from Russia at their northernmost habitats down to their southernmost habitats in Iran and Israel.
Age
These lizards can live for 10 years in the wild or up to 30 years in captivity.
Diet
They are omnivores eating snails, worms, eggs, young birds and mice.
Threats
The IUCN lists this species as Least Concern and considers them to have a stable population.
Interesting Facts
This is a legless species of lizard with a similar appearance to snakes. However, they have a longer tail than snakes which they can drop when threatened, earholes, moveable eyelids and non-flexible jaws.
