Common Palm Civets Natural History

Size

The Common Palm Civet can grow to around 70cm and can weigh up to 4.5kg.

Habitat and Distribution

These civets are nocturnal living in the tropical jungles and rainforests of South and Southeast Asia.

Age

The life span for the Common Palm Civets is up to 20 years.

Diet

They feed at night and have a carnivorous diet feeding mostly on smaller animals such as frogs, rodents, insects and reptiles. They can also bulk out their diet with some fruits and flowers.

Groups

These animals are mostly solitary only really coming together to mate.

Threats

While these animals are currently listed as Least Concern they do face a number of threats including poaching and deforestation due to logging and palm oil plantations meaning that their numbers are declining fairly rapidly.

These animals can also be known as the Asian Palm Civet and the Toddy cat.
